Promoting Fundamental British Values

Schools have a duty to ‘create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British Values of Democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.'

At Castor British Values run through everything we do.

Democracy
As our pupils progress through the school, our curriculum emphasises many aspects of democracy.
The school has an active School Council, Rights Ambassadors and Arts Ambassadors groups.

Rule of Law
Our school values include six key elements: Respect, Trust, Friendship, Forgiveness, Honesty, Kindness and Respect.
To ensure this is realised, school rules are important. Pupils regularly discuss aspects of behaviour, both within class and when appropriate, with adults across the school. Teachers begin each new year by creating Class Charters using knowledge of Rights Respecting. These are formulated with the children and displayed on the wall of the classroom. In this way, every child knows the standard of behaviour that we expect in our school.
The school manages behaviour positively; we use a range of rewards, such as praise, house points, shooting star tickets and celebration assemblies to share success. There are sanctions within our behaviour policy to be used where necessary and there are occasions where we personalise a support programme for pupils in consultation with their key adults and family.

Individual Liberty
Pupils' opinions are respected; with many opportunities to be shared.
We take collective responsibility to ensure that individual liberties are respected and we run a comprehensive range of interventions to ensure all learners can achieve their potential.
We allow our pupils into class half an hour before the start of the school day to start their learning.
There is a comprehensive range of clubs the pupils can attend that have been created to ensure the children's wider interests are catered for.

Mutual Respect
It is a primary aim of our school that every member of the school community feels valued and respected, and that each person is treated fairly and well. Each week we have a ‘Celebration Assembly’ within which we recognise pupils for a number of different reasons.
Our pupils take on a broad range of responsibilities including school council and sports leaders.
Our pupils have many talents that we showcase through a range of performance opportunities.
We actively support charitable causes and have raised money for a variety of causes, including local food banks and homeless charities. 

Tolerance
At Castor, we educate pupils from a range of backgrounds from many different places. We are a caring community that aims to promote an environment where everyone feels happy, safe and secure. Discrimination isn't tolerated and is dealt with quickly. Every member of the school community is encouraged to behave in a considerate way towards others.
We treat all children equally and aim to help children grow in a safe and secure environment, and to become positive, responsible and increasingly independent members of the school community.
Our PHSE curriculum equips the pupils to negotiate, share and co-operate and our RE curriculum teaches the pupils about the beliefs of many religions. We have woven through our curriculum other opportunities to develop an appreciation of differences and to learn about the lives of others.
